What is Domiciliary care?

Trustworthy care, at the hours you need it, can be harder to find than it should be

Domiciliary care, also known as home care, is professional support provided in a person's own home to help with everyday living. Rather than moving into a care home or residential facility, the individual stays in familiar surroundings while a trained carer visits to provide whatever level of help is needed.

It is one of the fastest growing forms of care in the UK, and for good reason. Domiciliary care can include help with washing, dressing, meals, medication, mobility or household tasks. It is flexible, dignified and, crucially, preserves the independence and routine that matter so much to the people who receive it.

Whether care is needed following a diagnosis of dementia, after a hospital discharge, during a difficult period of mental ill health, or simply to give a family carer time to rest, domiciliary care is often the most compassionate and practical answer.

Round-the-clock support, in the home they love

Some people need a little help to keep life running smoothly. Others need sustained, specialist support around the clock. Private domiciliary care adapts to both, without asking your loved one to leave the home they know and love.

Because the care is arranged privately, the schedule is built around the individual — not around a rota, a panel decision or a fixed package. Visits can be added, extended or reshaped as needs evolve.

And because you choose Seren, the carers who walk through the door are consistently the same skilled, warm people your family comes to trust.

Understanding private care at home costs

Private domiciliary home care costs typically run from around £27–£32 per hour in Wales and the wider UK, depending on the level of care required, time of day and visit frequency. Overnight and waking night cover is priced separately. We will always be transparent about costs before any care is arranged.

There are also funding routes that many families are not aware of and our team will help you explore what you may be entitled to.

Local Authority Funding

Following a free care needs assessment, your local council may fund all or part of your home care if assets do not exceed £23,500.

NHS Continuing Healthcare

Covers the full cost of care for those with a primary health need. Often not applied for because families don't know it exists. Ask your GP for a referral.

Attendance Allowance

For those over State Pension age with a physical or mental health need. Currently £73.90–£110.40 per week (2025/26). Can be used directly toward private home care costs.

Private Funding

Many families choose to fund private domiciliary care directly, giving maximum flexibility in choosing their home caregivers and arranging visits at their preferred times.

Questions we hear from families every day

What is a care package and how do I know what my loved one needs?

A care package is a personalised plan of support, built after a proper care needs assessment. It covers what help is needed, how often, and to what standard. You do not need to know the answer before you speak to us — that is precisely what our assessment process is designed to work out. We will ask the right questions, listen carefully, and recommend what we genuinely believe is right. There is no obligation to proceed.

How is private care different from what the council arranges?

With private care, you choose your carers, your schedule and your provider. There is no means-testing, no rationing and no sending different carers each week. Families who move from council-arranged care to private home care services consistently tell us that the difference in quality and consistency is immediately apparent. Our carers are warm, skilled and reliably the same people — which matters enormously for anyone receiving care at home.

How do I find reliable caregivers near me?

Call our team. We serve families across Wales and England, and our consultants take the time to understand your loved one's specific needs, personality and preferences before recommending anyone. We do not fill slots — we make matches we are confident about. Once care is in place, a named relationship manager stays in contact throughout.

What if needs change, can the care package be adjusted?

Always. Private care packages should evolve as the person does. We review every care arrangement regularly and respond to changes in need — whether that means increasing visit frequency, adding overnight support, introducing clinical care, or transitioning to live-in care. Nothing is fixed. Everything is built to flex.

Is private care only for self-funders or can it be funded in other ways?

Private care can be funded in several ways: directly by the individual or their family, through local authority direct payments following a care needs assessment, through NHS Continuing Healthcare for those with a primary health need, through Attendance Allowance, or through a personal injury compensation award. Our team can help you understand what funding routes may be available to you and connect you with specialist financial advisors where relevant.
