When the time comes, the right decision matters more than anything

There comes a point for many families when the question is no longer whether a loved one needs more support, but what kind, and where. A care home can feel like the obvious answer. Yet for most people, leaving home is among the very last things they would choose.

Live-in care and respite care offer a different answer entirely: expert, personal support that comes to your loved one, rather than taking your loved one away from everything familiar.

At Seren Healthcare Solutions, we believe your loved one deserves a home caregiver who knows them, champions them and is genuinely there, at every hour, every day.

Respite Care

A proper break for family carers without the worry

Caring full time for a loved one is one of the most demanding things a person can do. Respite care provides planned or emergency relief, with a trusted, trained private carer stepping in at home so routines continue and safety is assured.

  • Short-term planned and emergency respite cover
  • Overnight and waking night support available
  • Dementia and complex condition respite care for elderly people
  • Medication management throughout
  • Seamless handover and full care record-keeping
  • Personal relationship manager as your single contact
  • Can be arranged at short notice, often within 24 hours

Advantages of live-in care

What live-in care looks like

  • 24/7 dedicated, one-on-one support every day
  • Your loved one never has to leave home
  • Familiar environment maintained, vital for dementia and stroke recovery
  • Independence and personal routine preserved
  • Couples can stay together in their own home
  • Constant companionship, never alone
  • Meals prepared to personal preference
  • Significantly reduced infection risk compared to shared residential care
  • The family home does not need to be sold to fund care

Things to consider

  • A spare bedroom is required solely for the carer's use. Where your loved one does not sleep well, a night carer may be needed.
  • As needs change, home modifications such as handrails, ramps and hoists may be needed to maintain independence and safety.
  • Funding may benefit from advance planning. We can connect you with specialist financial advisers.

Live-in care vs a care home, an honest comparison

This is one of the most significant decisions a family makes. There is no universal right answer, but when the evidence is weighed, particularly around dementia care, infection risk, continuity of carer and quality of life, private live-in care consistently comes out ahead for those who want to remain in their own home.

Paying for live-in and respite care

One of the most important differences between live-in care and residential care is that your loved one's home does not need to be sold to fund it. Several routes exist, and our team always takes time to help families understand what may be available.

Lifetime Mortgage

Borrow against the value of your home while retaining ownership. Interest rolls up and is repaid on sale. Most plans include a no-negative-equity guarantee.

Home Reversion

Sell part of your property below market value in return for a lump sum or income, while remaining at home rent-free. Professional advice is essential.

Local Authority Funding

Available following a free care needs assessment if assets do not exceed £23,500. It may cover all or part of the cost through direct payments.

NHS Continuing Healthcare

Covers the full cost of care for those with a primary health need. Referral is available through a GP or social services.

Attendance Allowance

For those over State Pension age. Currently £73.90–£110.40 per week (2025/26) and available toward private home care costs.

Private Funding

Many families fund private live-in care directly, offering the most flexibility without means-testing or assessment delays.

Concerns we hear often

How do I know the carer will be right for my loved one?

We take matching seriously. Before we identify a candidate, we gather a full picture of your loved one — their needs, personality, preferences, hobbies and daily routine. We then arrange a virtual introduction so your family can meet the proposed carer, ask questions and form your own view. If the match does not feel right, we will find someone who does. We will not place a carer we are not confident about.

Will the quality of private live-in care really be better than a care home?

In our experience, for the vast majority of people who want to remain at home — yes. One-to-one, 24-hour care from a consistent, trained home caregiver provides a quality of personal attention that even excellent residential settings cannot match. Families who come to us having considered both options consistently tell us they wish they had chosen live-in care sooner. Our carers are also genuinely humble and friendly — this is something families remark on time and again.

Can carers manage medication and conditions like dementia or stroke recovery?

Yes. All of our carers are trained in medication administration and are experienced in supporting a range of specialist conditions — including dementia, Parkinson's disease, stroke recovery and complex physical and mental health needs. We match carers specifically to your loved one's clinical and personal profile.

How quickly can respite care be arranged for an elderly relative?

We understand that respite care is sometimes needed urgently. Our team works to arrange cover as promptly as possible — often within 24 to 48 hours — ensuring neither the individual nor their family carer is left without support at a difficult moment.

How do I find home caregivers near me who I can truly trust?

Call our team. We serve families across Wales and the wider UK, and our care consultants will take the time to understand your situation in full before making any recommendation. No obligation — just an honest conversation about what your loved one needs and how we can help.
